Remodeling a Bathroom
 by: Richard Rigor

So you’ve decided that it’s time to update your bathroom. Whether you’re planning to sell your home or you’ve simply decided your family needs a more updated space, there are a few important decisions you should make before you start.

First of all, consider what needs to go (no pun intended). Are you remodeling because all of the fixtures- tub, shower, toilet and sink- are outdated? Or is there a specific area of the bathroom that doesn’t work for you? Maybe the floor is outdated or peeling, or the mirrors are in inconvenient places, or you’d like to knock out a closet or install some shelving. Before you start, pin down the exact things about your bathroom that need work. Don’t immediately assume you need to overhaul the entire room. You may be able to save yourself big bucks by starting with the problem areas.

Driveway Landscaping

Driveway Landscaping
 by: Janeth Duque

Landscaping driveways does not necessarily mean the driveway itself, although the design of your driveway can impact the look and feel of your landscape. Rather, many people neglect to landscape their driveways to look attractive. This includes adding landscaping elements to the sides of the driveway, as well as at the bottom and the top of the driveway. There are many softscape and hardscape elements that can be added to make the area surrounding the driveway more attractive.

Your driveway landscape is the entrance to your property. If you ignore it, the driveway can look more like an ugly scar than a part of your landscape. If properly incorporated, however, it is possible to create a nice looking element in your landscape, tying it in to the rest of your design and looking as though it truly belongs. It is very worth your while to make an attempt at landscaping around your driveway. You need not spend a great deal of money to landscape your driveway, but if you carefully choose features and elements that are attractive and creative, you can have a fairly low-cost driveway landscape that is inviting to visitors as well as to those who live inside the house.

Carlton Ware: A Colourful Collectible

February 26, 2008

These vibrant collectibles are as charming today as they were when they were first introduced.

Origin

The company Carlton Ware was formed in 1890 due to a partnership between J.F. Wiltshaw and J.A. Robinson. The company changed ownership several times during its century-old life. Today it is well known all over the world. Carlton Ware introduced this earthenware line of floral embossed patterns in the 1930’s.

Patterns were produced in either a green or yellow background and featured a range of floral patterns including: Fox Glove, Apple Blossom, Water Lily, Buttercup and Poppy.

Appeal

The vivid colours and floral patterns make this line of Carlton Ware as appealing today as it was in the 1930’s. This sturdy earthenware is used today for display and serving. Teapots, cream and sugars, tea cups, saucers, salt and peppers, toast racks, jam pots and a variety of serving pieces can still be found.

Quirky Fact

Pressure Washing Decks

February 26, 2008

A beautiful wooden deck, properly maintained, can add greatly to the aesthetic and resale values of a home.

Just look around, decks are almost everywhere. Not just houses but both municipal and commercial facilities use wooden decks and walkways extensively. Because of this pressure washing decks can be a great profit center for your business or even the whole business.

The great news is that decks need maintenance. As beautiful as a wooden deck can be it can be a real eyesore if not properly maintained.

Why Decks Need Maintenance

When a wood deck absorbs water the natural resins and color can be washed out over time.

The combination of wood and water creates a food source for mildew, fungus and mold promoting their growth. Wood and water combined with dirt and even air pollutiom will also contribute to the proliferation of mildew, fungus and molds. One thing to remember is that a wet deck with a thick coating of mildrew is very slick and slippery. This creates one heck of a “slip and fall” liability problem. Keep this in mind when speaking to the decision makers of commercial and municipal facilities.

Keep Your Eye Focused on Treasury Bond Rates To Adjust Your Current Mortgage Rates

February 26, 2008

Mortgage rates typically are based off the current rates of treasury bonds. Most lenders set their long term mortgage rates in line with 10 and 30-year treasury rates. The reason that they do this is quite simple. Treasury rates are the rates that are used as an index to represent what the future value of money will be by the secondary market and investors. The Federal Reserve Bank will issue these bonds along with an interest rate that it will pay to holder of the bond once it matures. The market, in reflecting economic and inflationary predictions, adjusts the yields. Mortgage rates are then set according to the yields. If the market expects that thing in the future are going to be good with low inflation then the mortgage rates will be lower. If the market forecasts higher inflation then the mortgage interest rates will also rise.

Gazebos - To Build or not to Build, that is the Question
 by: Dion Semeniuk

Gazebos - To Build or not to Build, that is the Question

So you’ve made the decision that you would really like a Gazebo.

You’ve researched all the pros and cons of owning one. You’ve

researched the different kinds that are out there, from wood to

metal. You’ve even nailed down the size you want and where to

locate it in your yard. Now, the question is, should I build it

myself or hire somebody with experience? Good question.

Let’s see if we can point out if building is for you. There are

several things to think about before starting to build a gazebo.

First of all, you will need some basic tools. This can range

from a miter saw to a screw driver. If you already have the

tools, then you are already a step ahead. If you do not, then

you need to start thinking about cost and how much you would

need to spend to either buy the necessary tools or to rent them.

Chiang Mai Guesthouses - What To Expect

February 25, 2008

No visit to Thailand is complete without visiting the city of Chiang Mai. Located in the north of the country, Chiang Mai is considered the capital city of traditional Lanna Thai culture. With easy access to mountain tribes and excellent hiking and trekking, it’s a destination many backpackers head for each year. And for accommodation, not only is staying at a guesthouse the epitome of the Chiang Mai experience, it is also very cheap.

There are a few things to keep in mind about guesthouses in Chiang Mai though. First, there are so many of them that there is currently more rooms than there is demand. This means the prices are really low. There are plenty of comfortable guesthouses available in the $5-$10 (200-400 baht) per night range. Your price per day even at the most comfortable of guesthouses will be reduced even further if you pay for a week or a month.

You’ll do better to compare prices and reserve your guesthouse room online or by phone ahead of time, or go look for a guesthouse on your own when you arrive. If you end up in Chiang Mai at the airport or bus terminal from Bangkok, many locals will come up and offer to bring you to a guesthouse. These folks get a share of every new customer they bring to the guesthouse, and you usually end up paying the price if you take them up on their offer to help you.

Proper Mulching

Proper Mulching
 by: Janeth Duque

Mulch is any type of material placed over the top of the soil to improve the soil. Mulch helps the soil retain moisture and can improve soil conditions. Additionally, mulch reduces weed competition by restricting the number of weeds that grow around your landscape plants. You can improve the health of your plants by using mulch around them to minimize damage by lawn mower blight and weed whacking. When one practices proper mulching, it can actually help the landscape maintain a healthy appearance. It can even contribute to the look of a well-groomed landscape. It is important, however, to properly apply your mulch. If it is not applied properly, you might find that rather than helping, you can cause harm to your plants and trees.

There are many different types of mulch. Just as there are different fertilizers, mulches come made from different materials. They can be bought commercially, or you can create your own mulch and save money. The two main classifications of mulch are inorganic and organic. Many people believe that all mulch is organic, but it is not. Inorganic mulches, while more effective at keeping out weeds, will not add to the composition of the soil, as it contains no nutrients to put into the soil. Inorganic mulches include various types of pulverized rubber, some geotextile fabrics, and even stones and lava rock. Organic mulches are comprised of things like woods chips, bark, leaves, pine needles, compost mixtures, cocoa hulls, and other mulches derived from plants. Even shredded paper, used in small amounts, can contribute to organic mulch.

Using Push Reel Mowers

February 25, 2008

If you’re not familiar with push reel mowers or if you haven’t used one since “back in the day”, there are a few points you should be aware of before using a push reel mower:

  • Don’t expect to cut tall weeds or dandelions. You notice how your gas-powered mowers get a little “overwhelmed” when cutting weeds or very tall grass? Those issues are a bit worse with reel mowers because they become harder to push and they are limited in the height of what they can cut. When cutting with a power mower, you can tilt the mower in order to access hard-to-cut areas. That’s not so with a reel mower, you can only cut grass below the cutting height bar.
  • Don’t cut wet grass. The wheels need traction in order to move the blades and if the wheels are slipping, especially if you’re cutting taller grass or weeds, the mowing becomes that much more difficult.

So, in order to get the best use from your push reel mower, make sure you do the following:

  • Keep your grass cut often enough so that it’s manageable and easier to cut using the reel mower.
