The Benefits of Steel Storage Buildings

May 31, 2007

Steel is gaining in popularity as a building material due to the many options it offers, its strength, and its affordability. Steel storage buildings are one of the many options available; they range from airplane hangars to garden sheds. The most popular use for steel storage buildings is as self-storage units. Security, space, strength and low maintenance are some of the advantages.

Steel is the preferred choice for storage buildings as it is strong enough to resist extreme weather conditions like high-speed winds, heavy snowfall and earthquakes. Low structural maintenance costs also make it a viable alternative. Steel storage buildings can be coated with aluminum compounds to prevent rusting. Steel paneling coated with aluminum compounds prevents rusting, and increases the life of the panels to almost thirty years.

Steel storage buildings quick and easy to erect. They are available in the form of pre-engineered structures that are sent directly to the building site for instant assembling. Pre-engineering involves cutting, drilling and welding done at the manufacturing site itself, thus making erection quicker and cheaper.

Pre-Fabricated Steel Buildings

May 31, 2007

More and more construction is being done with steel in recent years, as more people learn about the many benefits of using steel vs. other construction materials. One of the many features offered when building with steel is the option to purchase a prefabricated steel building.

Prefabricated steel buildings can be anything from simple storage structures to complex steel framed office buildings. Prefabricated steel buildings cost less than most other types of buildings for a number of reasons. For example, prefabricated buildings are available along with all of their components, all ready to the assembled. Just about anyone can assemble and erect a prefabricated steel building, thus decreasing labor costs and saving time.

Use of computer-based technologies for precise designing, measuring and planning increases the accuracy of cost prediction. There are no surprises while assembling; the construction process is typically highly efficient and less subject to delays and setbacks.

Manufacturers of steel buildings take responsibility for all of the related activities, from design to construction. This makes coordination much easier, as there is no dependency on multiple suppliers for various components and services. Even the fees are comprehensive, with all the costs included and adjusted to suit the package. Having a single point of contact makes communication and coordination simpler.

Are Candles Safe?

May 30, 2007

I love candles! I have candles of all shapes, sizes and scents in every room of my home. I’m the woman at the local candle shop sniffing every single candle and calling out to her friends "Oh, you gotta smell this one!" So you can imagine my horror, my shock, my disbelief, when my neighbor told me that burning candles could be dangerous to my health! Say it ain’t so!

The first stage was denial. I just refused to believe any such nonsense! Then, the doubt began to creep in. Could it be possible? I saw the signs, the soot ring on the top of my jar candles, black marks on the wall. Should I be worried, maybe I should do some research, if nothing else, to prove them wrong! Finally reason took hold and the quest began! Are the candles I’m using dangerous? Are there safe alternatives? Am I going to have to give up my beloved candles forever?

Are the candles I’m using dangerous?

A Guide to Commercial Steel Buildings

May 30, 2007

Commercial steel buildings are prefabricated and custom-designed for use as offices, stores, distribution centers, freight terminals, service stations, aircraft hangers, commercial garages and more. Since they can be molded into a range of shapes and sizes, steel buildings are finding applications in most any industry imaginable.

All commercial steel buildings are pre-engineered at the manufacturing site and shipped out along with their components to the construction site for assembling. They are particularly advantageous as they can be easily increased in length and number. Since steel does not require much space for support columns, there is more usable free space, making it more suitable use in large warehouses and airplane hangers. Most manufacturers have trained staff who deliver and lay out the components. This makes construction easier and more efficient.

In addition to their low structural maintenance, and durability, accurate price estimates make steel buildings more attractive in the commercial sector.

Commercial steel buildings come in three major categories. The first is steel framed, wherein just the structure or the frame is made of steel, and the external finishing is done with other conventional material such as stucco or brick. This is common in offices, houses and other smaller establishments.

The Advantages of Steel Buildings

May 30, 2007

Use of steel as a construction material has seen phenomenal growth in the last few years. Although steel buildings have been used in the commercial and industrial sectors for a long time, they are increasingly gracing the skylines of countries all over the world.

Use of metals in construction began in the 1700’s with the use of iron columns within walls. Iron beams and columns became a common feature in large industrial buildings over the years. Ever since Sir Henry Basserner invented steel in 1855, it has become an integral part of bridges, pipelines and even skyscrapers. Various difficulties with the use of wood, such as its expense and the impact its use has on the environment, have contributed to the popularity of steel.

Steel buildings offer many advantages. They are usually constructed much faster than buildings using other materials; the costs are usually lower compared to traditional building methods; they are lighter weight; they are easier to maintain; and they carry a reduced risk of fire. Moreover, steel is 66% recyclable, which makes it an especially cost-effective and environmentally sound alternative to any other construction material. Above all, strength is a major plus for steel. Steel structures can withstand unfavorable weather conditions such as hurricanes, high winds, heavy snow and even earthquakes. They are also resistant to termites, creeping, cracks, splitting and rotting, thus increasing durability.

The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) home mortgage loan -

- the "single family package": which provides mortgage lending programs to those looking to buy property comprising of between one and four units.

- the "multi-family package": which provides home loans to those looking to buy property comprising of between five or more units.

Keep-in-mind, however, that the FHA program does require that potential applicants be able to make a down-payment. In most cases this amounts to 3% of the purchase price. Countering this, however, is that the FHA mortgage loan program normally offers interest rates below market rate, which over a prolonged period of time could end up saving you lots of money.

Why You Might Need a Waterproofing Consultant

May 29, 2007

Waterproof consultants perform a wide variety of functions. Why should you hire a waterproofing consultant for your project? Firstly, professional consultants in this field are often very knowledgeable in finding the problem and the best way to fix it. Since they are waterproofing specialists, they have had intensive training or years of experience in the industry. Hiring a waterproof consultant is often less time consuming than your own attempts at locating leaks or other problems. In addition, consultants can often perform the job for you or refer you to a contractor for the project.

One service typically available among consultants is a survey and inspection of the area. The survey and inspection can include visual inspections, laboratory testing, investigation and discovery of leaks, moisture measurements and of course, a price estimate. Many waterproofing consultants also provide drawings and specifications. By mapping out your basement, for instance, and highlight trouble spots, the consultant can easily formulate a plan-of-action to repair your home. Some waterproofing consultants also offer quality control management for your project. If you hire an outside contractor for the work, the consultant’s on-site quality control can ensure your needs and specifications are being met. In addition, these consultants offer follow-up inspections, when necessary, which can save future damage and costs.
